Diagnostics and Monitoring

The QuickStart setup creates a PPP dial entry from the information you've supplied (SPIDs, ISP dial number, CHAP or PAP user id and password). In our case, this was an Internet Dial entry as shown below:

ISDN call status is readily available from the call monitor menu. You may also need to visit the configuration menus to further refine your settings (for example, to add directory numbers to the ISDN D channel to allow incoming calls and map them to POTS ports).

The SOHO provides an on-going cumulative call accounting on its call status menu, as well as log that can be configured for various levels of detail. For example, the following log entry illustrates a completed call using NAT, showing the handoff time between placing the call and dynamically assigning an IP address to the PC that generated traffic to place the call.

We've found the disconnect reasons shown in the log useful for trouble-shooting authentication problems with our ISDN telco and ISP. Since the information contained in the log is cumulative and must be scrolled for viewing, it can be helpful to reset the log when attempting to diagnose a recurring problem. Both the log and call counters are cleared when the unit is powered off, so be aware of this when using the call counter to estimate your monthly ISDN usage.
