A Core Competence Product Evaluation
Meet The Applications In the best of worlds, I should be able to purchase a standard off-the-shelf laptop, hand-held computer, or personal digital assistant from any vendor, pop in any commercially-available PCMCIA wireless modem, and surf the 'net with my favorite web browser: Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. With GoAmerica's AirBrowse service, I can do just that. During software installation, GoAmerica configured my existing copy of Netscape to use its server as a proxy. Whenever I launch the GoAmerica service from my PC's Start Menu, it automatically brings up Netscape with a local "welcome" file as the default page. From there, I simply point and click to browse any page on the Internet. Configurable options allow me to prevent the retrieval of large pages and images unless I ask for them - useful features on any desktop, but essential features over wireless!
Want to send and receive email while on the road, even email with document attachments? GoAmerica's Email Plus service includes a POP3 email client application with a familiar look and feel. This application pulls down email from any POP3 mail server on the Internet and sends mail through GoAmerica's SMTP server and a goamerica.net email account supplied with the service. With Email Plus, I can view a list of mail headers before selectively downloading only the messages I want to read, forward messages without downloading them, delete unwanted messages as a group with a single keystroke, and send or receive files as attachments. The In Box window even tells me how large each message is so that I can make informed decisions about which to read and which to skip, without expending precious battery power or incurring unwanted per Kbytes usage costs.
Additional services available through GoAmerica include AirBoss/SCOUT, a wireless real-time information service that provides weather and traffic reporting and alerts, and AirBoss Mobile Messaging, an integrated voice/fax/paging/email delivery service. For wireless access to corporate Intranets and Extranets, GoAmerica's Mobile Application Toolkit can be used to develop custom application-layer proxies that enable mobile computing device access to corporate information services.
