Up and Running: Configuring the ISDN Card

DIP switches on the card must be used to modify I/O Port settings if necessary to avoid conflicts with other installed hardware -- save yourself a headache by checking current I/O Port usage in the Windows 95 Control Panel before installing the card. Once you’ve done this, insert the card into an empty ISA slot, boot up your PC, and use the Windows 95 Control Panel to add the new hardware. The Add New Hardware wizard installs all necessary drivers and software for this Network Adapter, hopping back and forth several times between the directories containing the Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack and DataFire drivers. When the setup is finished, Windows 95 re-boots the PC and runs the ISDN Configuration Wizard.

Once the Digi DataFire-U is installed correctly, the ISDN Configuration Wizard will appear during Windows 95 startup. This wizard prompts you to enter your ISDN switch type, Service Profile Identifiers (SPIDs), and ISDN phone numbers. A second window requires you to identify the directories containing the Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack and DataFire drivers. That’s all there is to it – the wizard does its thing, notifies you when configuration is complete, and suggests rebooting your PC. You can re-run the wizard if subsequent changes are required; no additional configuration software is provided.

To use the Digi DataFire-U, you’ll also need to create a Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking connection to place an ISDN call to your ISP or corporate access server. We used the Dial-Up Networking Make New Connection wizard to create a new connection profile, selecting DATAFIRE ISA1 U-Line 0 from the "modem" list when prompted.
