Cornerstone Issue 92: April, 2009
Welcome to Issue 92 of Cornerstone, a subscription-only electronic
newsletter issued periodically by Core Competence.
Cornerstone reports on a wide range of networking topics and
activities involving Core Competence. A brief abstract explains
what you will find if you choose to visit each URL.

"Failing to prepare is preparing to fail." Nothing better sums
up the frustration and expense of many legacy wireless network
deployments. 802.11n represents an opportunity to do better. In
this webinar, Lisa Phifer joins Sri Sundaralingam of AirTight to
present an 802.11n pre-deployment checklist of do's and don'ts.

In this BNET webinar, Lisa Phifer joins Citrix Online's Eric Bensley
to discuss trends that demand change in remote access policies, how
delivering the right kinds of remote access can enhance profitability,
and key differences between remote access technologies that can help
employers find the most cost-effective and efficient solution for
each employee.

In this review, Lisa Phifer takes AVerMedia's WiFi-4 Network Video
Recorder for a test drive to examine how turn-key Wi-Fi cameras can
simplify residential security surveillance.

Aerohive's HiveUI is an embedded Web manager that can be used to
provision up to 12 HiveAPs without a HiveManager appliance. In this
review, build our own little "hive" to learn about the benefits and
limitations of HiveUI.

802.11n-based consumer products are now on their fourth generation,
as demonstrated by TRENDnet's TEW-664UB, an inexpensive dual-band
300 Mbps draft-N USB adapter. Here, we illustrate range improvements
offered by this 11n adapter in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.

As businesses move full steam ahead toward bigger, faster 802.11n WLANs,
many factors must be considered -- including security. In this workshop
tip, Lisa Phifer identifies new considerations that must be addressed
to deliver the same or better security with 802.11n.

Most administrators already understand how to secure wireless notebooks,
but Wi-Fi phones, printers, cameras and specialized devices like barcode
scanners can pose unique challenges. In this workshop tip, Lisa discusses
techniques used to secure this new wave of embedded 802.11n devices.

Cellular data (WWAN) services excel at on-the-go/outdoor Internet
access, whereas 802.11n WLANs are better suited for on-site/indoor
private network access. Together, these technologies deliver more
robust and ubiquitous connectivity than either by itself. But for
mobile workers who use both, there's a catch: roaming.

This white paper, written by Core Competence for SonicWALL, explains how
SonicWALL Aventail E-Class SSL VPN appliances can be used to enable secure
yet agile access to any business application, at any time, using any device,
over any network.

VPN deployments have become an integral part of most networking solution
providers' portfolios, but customers' needs have evolved, creating demand
for more advanced VPN technologies. In this project FAQ, Lisa Phifer
explains how to help customers (including those with existing VPNs) make
decisions about buying advanced VPN technologies.

Many IT departments see the iPhone as a runaway train and feel powerless
to stop it. At the Gartner Wireless Mobile Summit, Lisa Phifer reports on
a presentation by McAfee research scientist Jonathon Zdziarski, who
instructed a packed house how to jump out of that train's way.
http://searchmidmarketsecurity.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid198_gci1350462,00.html
As budgets contract and mobile workforces grow, many midmarket businesses
are left stranded between a rock and a hard place. Mobile device management
systems are designed for enterprises with big problems and big budgets.
In this tip, Lisa Phifer enumerates what smaller companies can do to secure
smartphones at minimum cost.

The simple pre-shared keys (PSKs) designed for homes and small businesses
are limiting and risky, but strong 802.1X access control requires enterprise
class infrastructure. In this tip, Lisa Phifer discusses simple-but-safe
approaches for security-conscious SMBs short on staff and cash.

As a site expert for searchNetworking.com, Lisa Phifer answers reader
questions pertaining to all things wireless. In this Q&A, she explains
how to detect and classify rogue wireless access points.

A reader interested in understanding the performance impact of
802.11n coexistence techniques and high-throughput APs that
operate in Greenfield mode in the presence of 802.11a/g prompted
this Q&A.

In this blog, Dave takes exception to conclusions authors Cormac Herley
and Dinei Florencio published in a paper entitled A Profitless Endeavor:
Phishing As Tragedy Of The Commons. Dave explains why he claims, "the
study presents an interesting analysis and some startlingly different
measures of the impact of phishing, but doesn't mirror the phishing
reality very well."

The Internet Security Alliance is urging the Obama administration to
assist in assuring that the nation's cyber infrastructure is secure by,
you bet, providing market incentives "to spur industry to adopt security
procedures to protect cyber infrastructure." Is this simply another
industry seeking bailout, do we need regulatory intervention, or should
the ISA offer the administration a long term plan for a federally funded
security initiative they could actually implement before Uncle Sugar
signs the check?
http://www.securityskeptic.com/arc20090301.htm#BlogID723
Dave reviews an expert panel discussion on IPv6 adoption held during
IETF 74. Assuming the role of an earnest listener in the audience, Dave
questions why so much of the adoption remains rhetoric and why v4/v6
transition was neglected for so long. He closes by applauding Russ
Housley for having the good sense and gumption to admit that there is
only one real reason for the long tail of IPv6 adoption.
