To learn more about VPNs, join Dave Piscitello, Joel Snyder and Fred
Avolio at N+I Atlanta. On Day 1, Fred and Dave provide an overview of
VPN technologies, alternatives, applications, use considerations, and
selection criteria. On Day 2, Joel and Dave examine the nitty gritty
details that make or break an IPsec VPN. Both days include live
demonstrations and plenty of practical recommendations for successful
VPN deployment.

Because both the "wireless at the office" and the road warrior user
communities create similar security problems, Dave Piscitello feels
that "Trust No 1" is the correct approach. With WatchGuard's
permission, CoreCom reposts Dave Piscitello's LiveSecurity column
that recommends positioning WLAN access points outside the firewall.

The Noah Principle - have at least two of everything - is a proven
approach. Why expect your desktop anti-virus scanner to go it alone?
The Ositis AVStripper appliance uses Trend Micro's antivirus engine
to provide transparent virus scanning at the network edge. Read
about Lisa Phifer's experiences with AVStripper in this ISP-Planet
test lab evaluation.

In this article written for BCR magazine, Dave Piscitello explains
why he believe that intrusion detection is sexy and absolutely
necessary for certain kinds of attacks, but over the long haul,
intrusion prevention will better serve an organization.

We are frequently asked about availability of "free" VPN clients.
Before selecting a VPN client, you must consider the purpose of the VPN,
the application(s) being protected, the security policy dictated by the
VPN gateway you are trying to reach, and the client platform. In her
July searchNetworking column, Lisa Phifer discusses these considerations
as a prerequisite to searching for free VPN clients.

In her August column, Lisa discusses one widely available type of
"free" client: those used in Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)
VPNs. In addition to the omnipresent Win32 VPN adapter, Lisa considers
PPTP clients available for Pocket PC 2002, Linux/FreeBSD/NetBSD, and
Mac OS. Next month: L2TP/IPsec.
