Switch Management (continued)

Switching ports from segment to segment is straightforward. Select the Segment Conf icon from the Category: menu. Select the segment to which a port is to be moved from the pulldown. Port-to-segment assignments for ports other than those already assigned the selected segment appear on the left. Select the port you wish to move; both the port and the ADD>> button are highlighted. Click the ADD>> and Apply buttons and the port is switched from one segment to another.

Note that you can also name segments from this window (which evokes another sub-window, not shown). We named segment-1 "outside" (i.e., the segment serves as a DMZ subnet in aproduction network), segment-3 "Inside (i.e., the segment wherein hosts protected by a firewall reside), and segment-2 "Isolate1", because we initially test equipment on isolated LAN segments.

If you click on a segment name from the hub bitmap, all ports associated with that segment will be highlighted in dark blue (others shaded gray). You can also connect or disconnect a segment from the cascade link by double-clicking on the link icon (this invokes your basic "do you really want to do this?" sub-windows). In the following illustration, you can see the effects of disconnecting segment-4 from the cascade, then selecting the outside segment to identify its ports:

The Transcend Quick Configuration Manager is a clever utility, but it's not the only way one would attempt to manage PS Hub 40's, especially remotely, along with other elements to manage in a network. The SmartAgent on the hub supports SNMP MIB-II, traps, repeater, and RMON (nine) management groups, and can be managed using SNMP Network Management Stations such as SunNet Manager and 3Com's own Transcend Workgroup Manager. To obtain the same configuration and statistical information one might obtain using the Transcend Quick Configuration Manager using a more general-purpose SNMP manager, one is likely to rely heavily on the RMON information. For example, a partial quick dump of the MIB-II interfaces tables on the PS Hub 40 via our SunNet Manager shows us a fair amount of the information one obtains via the General Info window:

The unit software can also be loaded with new software using TFTP via the Quick Configuration Manager's Upgrade facility.
